ACCEPTING HELP
Accepting help from others is a lesson in humble inter-connected living!
As a teenager I felt humiliated. Recuperating from each spinal surgery I was not allowed to carry my school bag of books from class to class. I relied on classmates to do it for me. One day I said to the friend who carried them so often, “I hate that you have to do this.” He said something like, “I don’t have to; I want to.”
In that moment I had a choice to wallow in self-pity or try to understand the power of his words.
Decades later I still remember those words. They were a challenge and an invitation into my earliest understanding that we need another.
I’m still figuring out the infinite ways in which our lives are inter-connected but I’m grateful for the gift that friend offered. I couldn’t but he could and so it goes for most of us. What help will you accept or offer?
PRACTICES:
- Be aware of the help you need or the help you can offer
- Be mindful of how our inter-connectedness is a teacher about life
Notice that your awareness of your inter-connectedness is a path to grateful and humble living.
