HOW’S YOUR HOLIDAY SPIRIT?
Will your words and deeds reflect the holiday spirit?
On the Monday before Thanksgiving I was at Costco looking for a parking space. I was stunned by the aggressive and hostile behavior of drivers in that lot. That was only the beginning! Inside the store it appeared that a convention of grumpy, angry people had commandeered shopping carts to spread their misery.
Was this really the crowd I wanted to share my own gratitude with?
The choice was quite simple. All I can do is to be grounded and present to the spirit of the holiday and to human kindness, goodness and gratitude. And then someone unexpectedly asked if I’d like to go ahead of them in the checkout line. We smiled at one another and shared season’s greetings. It was a simple thing!
On my way home I reflected on how simple words, gestures and looks communicate what is in our hearts. How will you and I choose to be each day?
PRACTICES:
- Begin each day with a grounding exercise of expressing gratitude
- In the course of each day be aware of one vital expression of the holidays that you would like to share with a stranger.
Notice how – even midst the stress of the holidays – your experience and spirit shifts.
