UNEXPECTED BLESSINGS
Unexpected blessings often appear in the midst of the ordinary.
A local youth group in my community makes what they call Blessing Backpacks each year for distribution to homeless women and men. Each bag is filled with basic food, toiletry and clothing items. To make it easier they provide a shopping list of items they need. So off I went to the supermarket with list in hand where my thankfulness in supporting this project quickly turned to frustration.
Would I allow my frustration at not finding some of the food items define my experience or not?
For over twenty years I worked with and knew homeless and hungry people. As I began to focus on the items from the list that I could find I realized that this exercise from the youth group was not about shopping.
As I vividly pictured living on the streets and needing the items to survive and maintain cleanliness a flood of memories of homeless men, women and children was in front of me. In that moment I was in an unexpected place of blessing. Remembering the blessings I’d received from the homeless, thinking of the blessing of the youth group and remembering the blessings of my daily life.
